How a contractor gets recommended by ChatGPT and Google's AI answers

AI assistants name two or three companies when homeowners ask who to call. What those tools look at, and what a home service business can do about it.

Electrician in a hard hat installing wiring

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity “who is the best electrician near me” and you do not get ten blue links. You get a short answer that names a few companies, often with a sentence on why. Google now does something similar at the top of many searches with AI Overviews.

For a home service business, that short list matters. A homeowner who gets three names is likely to call one of them. If you are not named, you never got a chance.

Where AI tools get their answers

These tools do not have a private list of good contractors. They piece together an answer from what is already published about you:

  • Your website. What services you offer, where you work, and whether your pages say so clearly.
  • Your Google Business Profile and other listings. Categories, service areas, hours, reviews.
  • Reviews across platforms. The rating, the volume, and what customers actually say.
  • Other sites that mention you. Local news, directories, associations, suppliers, “best of” lists.

When those sources agree and say a lot, the tools can describe you with confidence. When they are thin or contradict each other, you get left out.

What helps

Say plainly what you do and where

AI tools quote and summarize. Pages that state facts in plain sentences are easy to use: “We repair and replace residential furnaces and heat pumps in Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler. Same-day service is available Monday to Saturday.” A page full of slogans gives them nothing to work with.

Give each main service its own page. Answer the questions people ask, such as what it costs, how long it takes, and whether to repair or replace, with real specifics.

Make your details match everywhere

Your business name, address, phone number, services and service area should read the same on your website, Google, Yelp, Angi, the BBB, Facebook and every directory you are on. Mixed details make it harder for any system, AI or Google, to be sure it has the right company.

Add structured data

Schema markup is code on your website that labels facts for machines: this is a business, these are its services, this is its service area, these are its hours. It does not show up for visitors, and it makes your information easier to read for search engines and the tools built on top of them.

Earn reviews that say something

“Great service!” helps a little. “They fixed our AC the same afternoon and explained the repair in plain terms” helps more, because it tells a reader, human or machine, what you are good at. Ask customers to mention the job you did.

Get mentioned off your own site

A sponsorship of a local team, a quote in a local news story, membership in a trade association, a profile on a supplier’s dealer locator. Each is another source that confirms you exist and what you do.

What to be wary of

Anyone promising to guarantee an AI recommendation is guessing. These tools change often, answers vary from one question to the next, and nobody controls them. What you can do is measure: ask the major tools the questions your customers ask, in the towns you serve, and record who gets named. Then repeat it monthly and see whether the work is moving you onto the list.

The good news

Almost everything that helps you in AI answers also helps you in Google’s regular results and on the map: clear service pages, consistent listings, strong reviews, real mentions. It is not a separate bet. It is local SEO done thoroughly.
